basics name • magpiekit -> magpiepaw -> magpiemouth age • 112 moons [little more than 9 years] gender • dmab cis sexuality • straight or bisexual; he is unsure and thinks it doesn't matter because he can't act on it anyways clan • shadowclan rank • kit -> apprentice -> medicine cat apprentice -> medicine cat
appearance allegiance • a black cat with low white and yellowish eyes. full • a somewhat scrawny and lithe cat, becoming skinnier with age instead of becoming more plump. short fur, which is a blessing at this point considering if it was longer it would be matted by now from age. yellowish eyes, somewhat faded as his sight gets worse; once a pale green-ish yellow, but it matches his yellowed teeth. he's not the prettiest cat, by all means.
personality
+ dependent may be a bad thing in a lot of cats' eyes, but it is a relatively good thing to him. it means he's not afraid to ask for help, he is willing to use information and advice he has sought out from others, and he is more than willing to rely on other medicine cats instead of trying to work on a situation completely alone. he's found that, in the worst cases, it turns out better if you calm yourself and ask others what else you could possibly do. + sacrificial, throwing away himself for his clan. while he cares about his physical well being, he doesn't see it as important as the clans health as a whole. he will even throw away his hopes, dreams, and aspirations for his clan if it means his clan is healthy and content. + loyal to the point it blindsides him. he will help other clans, but his clan comes first and foremost in his eyes. it always has, to the point it led him to where he is now. + selfless goes with his sacrificial and loyal traits. he thinks of others before he considers himself, and he thinks of others and takes care of others before himself. he's more than willing to give up his meal to a kitten who needs the extra weight. maybe it's why he's so scrawny.
- bitter and mean. he seems like a cat that snaps a lot and isn't usually happy, which sort of describes his outward personality in general. he is a cranky old cat with a bitter demeanor. - sharp-tongued to the point it could give as good of a thrashing as claws and teeth could to a cat, physically. he speaks his mind, even if it is mean or could get him in trouble. - disobedient to the point he received some sharp criticism from warriors before. when it comes to herbs, he knows what he is doing and he knows what needs to be done. he knows what he needs permission for, and he knows what he doesn't. but even if he doesn't get permission to cross into another territory to get herbs or talk to the other medicine cats, he'll do it anyways if he believes that in the end it is best for his clan. = docile since while hostility still can course through him, he's lost his aggressiveness. he's become passive, and docile. calm, even if he has a short temper. calm, so that he doesn't loose it when the clan needs him. if one didn't know him back in his youth, they'd probably think he might have been raised a kittypet as he doesn't typically get stressed with clan decisions and whereabouts as long as he clan is healthy. = short tempered should be a bad thing, but it is his short temper combined with his sharp tongue that tends to get cats to listen to him. to rest when they should be healing, to get them to eat the sometimes foul tasting herbs he needs them to eat, and to stop them from running headfirst into danger after their injuries as healed. it doesn't take a lot to get him to lecture you, but it isn't always a bad thing when he does. =

history
born under pinestars rule which you grew under for the first twenty two moons of your life as a single child to your parents, you were an unhappy kitten, by what you and your mother recalled. you were stuck in the middle, too young to play with the older kits and too old to play with the newcomers to the clan. without any siblings, and your father often consuming himself in work, it left you with your mother who wasn't all the playful type. so instead, you played with your friends who came to you one evening. well, who you considered friends but who you kept hidden from your parents to the best of your ability since they didn't seem to have the ability to see them which you found odd.
figkit and hollykit, they existed a long time ago during the beginning of badgerstar's rule, were willing to play with you and tell you about their time. they were odd cats, you could see right through them and never could touch them, but that was okay. you had creativity then, you learned how to play with the kittens who couldn't be touched. and you did, maybe it was desperation or maybe it was loneliness, but you played with them right up to your apprentice ceremony when pinestar named you "magpiepaw" and assigned you to tigertooth. tigertooth was a strict female warrior, a large maine coon with sharp teeth that gave her a fearsome bite. you looked up to her a lot.
with your arrival to the apprentice den, the less and less you saw of figkit and hollykit. you began, unknowingly, to turn more towards reality especially when you met dogpaw not too long after your ceremony. dogpaw was someone you fell head-over-paws for, and became enamored with just as she became enamored with you. the two of you would train together, eat together, and talk together. you would share what you thought your warrior name might be, and she would share what she thought hers would be. the two of you even began to discuss being mates, and readily announced that when both of you were warriors that you'd also be mates. you shared ideas of what future kits names should be, and she shared her ideas. you'd always compromise, saying that half the litter could have your name ideas and the other half could have hers.
this unfortunately wasn't long lived, and it absolutely crushed you when it was yanked from you. you had tried to keep it hidden, you didn't want anyone to know that you could see cats no one else could because you didn't know what it meant for you but you doubted you could be a warrior with it being public news. you didn't interact with these cats- those that showed up after figkit and hollykit had went back to the nursery, but out on the territory you'd occasionally run into one that would try to speak to you, you'd have to whisper back that you wanted nothing to do with them.
eventually, cats noticed. eventually, pinestar heard about it. and two months before your warrior graduation, you were ripped away from your warrior training. a meeting was called to rearrange mentors, you were nervous, you didn't know what the cause of it could be. tigertooth, in your opinion, was a perfectly good warrior and good enough to train him. it devastated you to learn your new mentor was lizardtooth, you were meant to become a medicine cat, and you had to delay your ceremony- what devastated you the most was that you wouldn't get to be with dogpaw like you wanted for the past four months. you were about ten moons old when the decision came in.
you felt dull, and empty, during the whole official process of becoming a medicine cat apprentice. regardless of lizardtooths explanations- the poor cat, always mean and cranky but tried to console you bless his heart- that you were the only cat in the clan with a wonderful gift which made you perfect for your job, you didn't find any reassurance. you even detested your gift for a while, going out of your way to ignore the occasional cat you saw. you didn't want to speak with starclan for most of your apprenticeship, and didn't want anything to do with them until the time for you to become a medicine cat was near.
you became bitter at clan life and at times thought of running off with dogpaw in the middle of the night, but you had no where to go and your loyalty told you that you needed to stay put. that you needed to do this for the clan because you were the only one who could, which is what they kept telling you, but it didn't ease the heartbreak or the hurt or the bitterness or the anger which only got worse when dogpaw earned her warrior name of "dogheart".
you were suppose to get your warrior name only one moon after she did since she was reckless and got held back, but being a medicine cat with a delay in training, you didn't get your medicine cat name until six moons after. six moons after she got her name, you were eighteen moons and she was twenty two moons. you received the name "magpiemouth", an awful sounding name but you grew into it, receiving the suffix 'mouth' for your short temper and sharp tongue.
then, life went on, and there was nothing you could do about it. you never gave yourself time to grieve for what could have been, what should have been, and what you lost. you never grieved when your mother died from a fox attack. you never grieved when your father was murdered by a rogue. you never grieved, you never let yourself grieve, so that you could provide for the clan instead of being out-of-commission temporarily because of your emotions. part of you, in the back of your head, figured it was better to close off your emotions instead of feeling them which wasn't good in the long run.
you felt as if you had your insides hallowed out by a badger when you learned dogheart had chosen a different mate into her warrior years. the feeling getting worse when you saw the kittens they had together. the anger and bitterness in your heart festering like that infected garden snake bite that blackpaw had two moons ago that nearly claimed the apprentices life. but, you swallowed it. you took care of dogheart's mate when he was injured or had whitecough without complaint. you took care of her kittens, who looked so much like her mate that it ripped you a part because you knew that in some other life they could have looked like yourself. and you just kept living.
it was lizardtooths death that finally cut what threads were holding you together, emotionally. releasing all those pent up feelings of self-loathing, hatred, anger, unhappiness, doubt, heart-ache, inadequacy at the thought you couldn't be as good as your late mentor. stormstar, who took pinestars place just a few moons after becoming an official medicine cat, was surprised to see you break down like that in the camp. spitting venom at those who came close or tried to sit vigil with lizardtooth's body which you buried your face in for the next two nights. stormstar reluctantly letting you stay, not eating or tending to your duties like you should. it was the one thing you were always grateful to the tom for, he finally let you grieve which was long-awaited. too long, in his opinion.
you calmed after that. you were about middle aged then, and the change in your demeanor was surprising to those who knew you from an apprentice. you were still sharp tongued and mean, still bitter, still cranky, but you calmed. you were more docile than you had been, you were less energetic as if lizardtooths death drained your own life force too. you were more willing to seek help and advice from others then, as before you would have gagged at the mere thought of going to windclan or riverclan for herbal help. you lost your aggressiveness, although there is still some hostility that burns through your old joints. you, as always, closed yourself off emotionally again but you were more willing to express your sorrow than you had been moons prior.
you reconciled with dogheart as she moved into the elders den where she'd tell her grandchildren stories. you became her friend in the following moons, keeping her company in her final moments right alongside the mate who had been lucky enough to have her who passed away not so long after she did. you enjoy the company of her spirit in your own den sometimes, but you know better now to let her go- something you should have done with your heart all those years ago.
however, one thing didn't change. your stubbornness. stormstar would always comment on that with some playful teasing jabs. stubbornness that kept you from getting an apprentice, because you didn't want retirement forced upon you. you wanted to die in the profession you had no choice in the matter in, all those years ago. and you were going to be damned if you didn't.
with stormstar's passing, your decision didn't change on the matter either. you grieved, but welcomed in lavendarstar warmly. a childish tom in your opinion, one you think needs to get a lecture every now and then- a thrashing with your tongue so to speak, but you realize he's a rather young cat still so you aren't too harsh with your criticism. you aren't the leader, and you know that, but it won't stop you from chiming in on how stormstar or pinestar would have done this different or done that differently or would be rolling their eyes in starclan at the tom. at times, it's playful, other times, its your true disagreements. age has worn you down into being a critical old cat.
prompt 2 sort of 1? kittens were fragile, but they were durable. that was the one of many things that were drilled in his head the most over the moons, at which point he'd lost count of, from how many situations similar to this one that they were in. sickness, injury, health concerns, he wouldn't say he's seen it all but he had seen the most of it even if he never got use to some cases. one particular case he never got use to was dying kits and apprentices, it was never fun to watch the life drain from a cats eyes who had barely experienced anything yet. it was also always hard to decide what to do. it was greenleaf, herbs were more plentiful, but that didn't mean that they grew everyday. it took time for these things to grow, and took time to collect. the more herbs he wasted on one life would mean less herbs to keep others, who had a chance to live, from recovering.
he had done it before- ending a life short to put them out of misery, but only during leaf-fall and leaf-bare when the weather was against them. better to end it during those seasons than fight when the cold would probably finish them off at night anyways considering how weak they already were, was his general ideology. however, it didn't mean he refused to give a fighting chance to them, because he did try with all his patients until there was no more he could do or couldn't do without jeopardizing lives of others. even the annoying ones who pushed all his buttons and the ones who kept chattering, and those feisty ones that he would have to forcefully bring back to their beds which was of some annoyance to him as the extra weight was not kind to his old arthritis-ridden joints.
but he decided, with some hope, that as it was greenleaf this kitten who was on the brink of death may just live. something he had promised the parents, who had been heart-broken at the news. magpiemouth didn't sugarcoat things, back when the black and white tom was younger he would do it often since he thought letting them down gently was a good idea, but with age he figured that bluntness was direct. it was to the point, it didn't beat around the bush, and they knew what they were dealing with. he promised to try his best, and he promised he'd do what he could until he couldn't do anything, but it did not guarantee survival. he'd be surprised if the kitten survived the night, at this point.
it was why, after a brief talk-over with the leader, he set out towards the riverclan border. even if he didn't get permission anyways, he would have still gone- he was too old to deal with stubbornness when it came to saving the life of someone or being isolated from his comrades across the border who dealt in the same trade as he did. too old, and too bitter, and too snappish; didn't listen to orders too well- directly disobeying if he disagreed with the verdict and thought that his idea would help more in the end when it came to the world of medicine. with all this, it is a surprise to hear that he did in fact listen to the youth. he wasn't beyond consulting other medicine cats, the younger ones who hadn't yet lived as long as him, and would turn to them often. they had fresher eyes, a saying his father use to use referring to the youth back when his father was still alive; when you get old, he'd say, you get dull and your eyes aren't so new and fresh like they use to be. the youth have fresher, newer, eyes and sometimes you need it to help you since they can sometimes see things you became blinded to, he'd ramble to his son.
and it was something he still went by today, as experience wasn't everything in his personal opinion. a clear head was also needed and beneficial, and so were youth who could come up with new ideas since their creativity was not yet drained. it was with this that he believed fresh eyes would help him see a situation better, and it was fresh eyes that would hopefully give him some advice on what to do with the child barely conscious for the past week in his den. it was fresh eyes, he thought hopefully, that would help him figure out how to conserve herbs and potentially save the cats life. maybe he'd even get told a new approach to use, one his mentor or him hadn't heard of all those years ago during his own training. but one thing he knew for certain had been that he needed to get back by nightfall, he had coaxed the eating of some herbs and part of a mouse to hold the kit over until he got back. he did not have time for idle chatter, the sooner he returned the better it would be for all of them.

thistlenose original image is public domain basics name • thistle-kit -> thistlepaw -> thistlenose age • 37 moons gender • DMAB agender/genderfluid; they, it, or she. sexuality • ??? clan • riverclan rank • medicine cat
appearance allegiance • thin white bicolor tabby with blue eyes. full • what a sight to see, a graceful, pale cat brushed with silver stripes and covered in delicate, feathery fur. thistlenose almost feels otherworldly in their grace, found often with a glassy blue gaze and distant expressions--as if they are floating through the grass, just a visitor from another plane.
thistle
personality positives (at least three) + empathetic. thistlenose is caring, gentle, and tender--perhaps it comes with the job. they do truly care, however, and + thorough. thistlenose is very serious about their job, and ensuring everyone gets the care they need. since it is almost all they do, nearly all of their mental energy is devoted to + intelligent. they pick up on new concepts quickly, and their memory is fantastic. negatives (at least three) - vindictive. although they are now an adult, and the riverclan medicine cat, thistlenose has not fully given up their tendency to hold grudges. their sense of responsibility allows them to generally not engage the instinct to be destructive in pursuit of revenge, but with non-riverclanners, thistlenose is nearly as unrestricted as they were in their youth. - detached. when not working, thistlenose often comes off as aloof. since they do not keep up with gossip and tend to be quite absorbed into their work, they tend to treat everyone who is not riverclan very neutrally--doing just what they are socially expected to do without being rude. although it is not due to actual apathy, they can come off as emotionless or indifferent. in reality, thistlenose does not usually have the mental energy to put forth into making sure non-riverclan cats are happy with their social graces. - etc. (can be fun facts, likes/dislikes, neutral traits, etc) = speaks with a very smooth, almost monotone voice that rarely flairs out of its measured tone; can be very soothing to some. = physical expressions, both facial and in body language, are rather "dull" and subtle, often completely missing. thistlenose's emotions are expressed almost entirely verbally. this was not always the case. = prone to hallucinations, can sometimes confuse these for visions of what is to come. believes they can see the future. = does not keep up with any events that are not brought to their den, or that are not their explicit responsibility to know. = excellent memory. can recall minor events with what can seem like complete clarity. = passive aggressive when upset. when thistlenose was a young cat, they were prone to subtle sabotages of cats who had slighted them. they'll never admit they hold a grudge, nor will they admit they would do anything to sabotage another cat--they are a medicine cat, after all.
relationships please remove non-applicable family members. behind the bullet please choose/replace the appropriate title (sibling > brother) and if more than one, create another line for it
mother • redtail, cis she-cat, deceased father • whitepelt, cis tom, alive sister • laurelpelt, trans she-cat, alive sister • darkfoot, cis she-cat, alive brother • pigeonpaw, cis tom, deceased (drowned) mate • can't have that in a starclan-fearing manga kit • can't have that in a starclan-fearing manga
mentor • spottedwing, cis she-cat, deceased apprentice • ???
history redtail was a pretty white she-cat spotted with red. her eyes were yellow. whitepelt was a silkier tom, completely white, blue eyes. whitepelt, despite his name, was often muddied below his neck from the mud he fished in. catching fish in shallow, muddy water was always his strong suit, and he was not afraid to get dirty for it.
prompt 02 blossomkit's body heaved with each breath he attempted to draw out, his little yellow body twitching unconsciously. thistlenose watched with dread, heat and cold drawing up her throat all at once. they knew he would not last more than another day or so--and if they allowed it, it would be days of slow suffering, the kit's pain unknowable as their mind slowly slipped out from the confines of their stiff, shaking body.
there wasn't a perpetrator, a big bad evil rat or state of weather to pin the blame on, either. blossomkit had simply fallen into this, one day. it had started with muscle pain, and had grown into fear and panic until the child did not seem to wake from their herb-induced stupor anymore. occasionally, blossomkit would offer a weak, glassy gaze beneath lidded eyes, but they did not speak much anymore.
for all her best efforts, thistlenose had nothing to show for it. she was simply sitting in her den day in and day out, now. |
